Prime Video has found its new ‘God of War.’ Dave Bautista has officially been cast as Kratos in the live-action "God of War" series, replacing Ryan Hurst after a serious injury forced the production to recast its leading man. The change comes after weeks of uncertainty surrounding one of Amazon’s biggest upcoming game adaptations.
Bautista, 57, brings plenty of action experience to the part. The former professional wrestler became a major Hollywood name through the "Guardians of the Galaxy" films before taking roles in "Dune," "Dune: Part Two," "Blade Runner 2049," and "Knock at the Cabin." Now, he will step into one of gaming’s most recognizable roles.
Ryan Hurst’s Injury Forced a Major "God of War" Recast
Kratos / IG / Ryan Hurst was announced as ‘Kratos’ in January 2026 and had already started filming the series in Vancouver. His time as the Spartan warrior ended unexpectedly after he tore his bicep while performing a stunt on set.
The injury required surgery and created a recovery period that would have pushed his return well into the production schedule.
Waiting for Hurst was not a practical option for Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television. Reports indicated that his recovery could have prevented production from restarting until 2027. With two seasons already ordered and an extensive shooting schedule ahead, the studios decided to find another actor for Kratos instead.
The decision created an expensive problem because production was already well underway. Four episodes had reportedly been filmed before Hurst’s injury stopped work. Scenes featuring Hurst as Kratos will now require reshoots with Bautista, adding another major task before the series can get back on schedule.
Filming originally began in Vancouver in February 2026. Production stopped following Hurst’s injury, but Bautista’s casting clears one of the biggest obstacles facing the series. The show is expected to resume production in the coming weeks as the team prepares its new lead for the demanding role.
Hurst’s departure also closes an interesting chapter in his relationship with the franchise. Before landing the Kratos role, he voiced Thor in the video game "God of War Ragnarök." His move from Thor to Kratos would have given him a rare connection to two of the series’ most important characters.
Dave Bautista Looks Built for the Kratos Role
Finding a replacement for Kratos was never going to be simple. The character needs an actor who can look physically intimidating while also carrying the emotional weight of the later "God of War" story. Bautista already has experience handling both sides of that equation.
His professional wrestling career gave him years of experience with physical performance and choreographed action. His movie career has since shown that he can bring more than muscle to the screen. Films such as "Blade Runner 2049," "Dune," and "Knock at the Cabin" allowed Bautista to take on quieter and more dramatic material.
That range could prove important because Prime Video’s "God of War" is not simply about a furious warrior fighting monsters. The story centers heavily on Kratos and his young son, Atreus. Their difficult relationship gives the Norse chapter of the franchise much of its emotional force.
The former star wrestler will need to capture the older Kratos, a man carrying the weight of his violent past while trying to become a better father. The role still demands huge battles and an imposing presence, but the quieter scenes between Kratos and Atreus could determine how well the adaptation works.
"God of War" Still Has a Huge Production Ahead
Dave / IG / Amazon has already given "God of War" a two-season order. The plan calls for the seasons to film back to back, an ambitious schedule that made a long production shutdown especially difficult to absorb.
Ronald D. Moore remains the showrunner behind the Prime Video adaptation. The veteran writer and producer has previously worked on major television projects including "Battlestar Galactica," "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," and "Outlander." His involvement gives Amazon an experienced hand for a story that mixes family drama with large-scale fantasy.
Callum Vinson plays Atreus, while Mandy Patinkin takes the role of Odin. Ed Skrein has been cast as Baldur, with Max Parker playing Heimdall and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson appearing as Thor. The series has assembled a sizeable cast for its journey through Norse mythology.
