For more than two decades, "Donkey" has been one of the funniest animated characters on the big screen. His nonstop chatter, loyal friendship, and unforgettable one-liners helped make the "Shrek" franchise a global favorite. Now, fans are finally getting a chance to learn where it all began.

DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures have officially confirmed a standalone "Donkey" movie, with Eddie Murphy returning to voice the beloved character. The film is set for a theatrical release on June 30, 2028, and promises to tell the story of Donkey's life before he crossed paths with Shrek.

"Donkey" Finally Steps Into the Spotlight

Despite his popularity, Donkey has never received his own feature film. Now, that is about to change. According to the official announcement shared on the "Shrek" X account, "Start heating up those waffle irons. DONKEY is setting out on his very own adventure June 30, 2028."

Unlike previous "Shrek" films, this movie will focus entirely on Donkey's personal journey. The story will explore the adventures and experiences that shaped his cheerful personality long before he wandered into Shrek's swamp.

An origin story gives the filmmakers plenty of creative freedom. ‘Donkey’ has always hinted at unusual moments from his past, but audiences have never seen them unfold. This film finally opens that door.

Eddie Murphy Returns to His Most Loved Animated Role

For many fans, ‘Donkey’ simply would not be the same without Eddie Murphy. His energetic performance became one of the defining features of the "Shrek" franchise and helped turn ‘Donkey’ into a fan favorite around the world.

Murphy's quick delivery, comic timing, and unmistakable voice gave the character endless charm. Every joke, emotional moment, and musical number felt more memorable because of his performance. His return ensures the new film will keep the same personality audiences have loved since the original "Shrek" debuted in 2001.

The comedian extraordinaire, 65, has often spoken warmly about playing ‘Donkey.’ Over the years, he has expressed interest in seeing the character receive his own movie. That wish has now become reality, giving him the opportunity to expand Donkey's story beyond the supporting role fans already know.

A Strong Creative Team is Leading the Adventure

Shrek / IG / Charlie Bean will direct the film. He previously directed "The Lego Ninjago Movie" and Disney's live-action version of "Lady and the Tramp.”

Joining him as co-director is Matt Flynn, a longtime DreamWorks story artist whose credits include "The Wild Robot" and "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish." His background in storytelling gives the project an experienced creative voice that understands the studio's style.

Rebecca Huntley will produce the film after working on successful animated hits, including "Kung Fu Panda 4" and "The Bad Guys." Her experience with large-scale family films adds another layer of confidence to the production.

The new film arrives after "Shrek 5," which is scheduled to reach theaters during the summer of 2027. That movie reunites Mike Myers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Fiona, and Eddie Murphy as Donkey, bringing the original cast back together for another adventure.

Releasing the standalone movie after "Shrek 5" makes sense for the franchise. It allows audiences to reconnect with Donkey before exploring his earlier life in greater detail. Fans will already be invested in the character when his solo story arrives the following year.

The "Shrek" series has always balanced comedy with genuine emotion. While Donkey is famous for making people laugh, he has also shown loyalty, courage, and kindness throughout the films. An origin story creates the perfect opportunity to explain how those qualities developed.
