Anyone who regularly watches Australian news would probably remember Sandra Sully. She has been a news anchor and journalist for ‘10 News First’ in Sydney and Queensland for over a decade. When she began hosting the Melbourne Cup coverage, Sully was the first female co-host, making her a trailblazer in the program.

It was Sully who became the first Australian television journalist to report on the terrorist events of the horrifying September 11 attacks. At the time, Sully was reporting live when the first attack occurred. As such, she immediately switched gears and covered the news for the world to see. Indeed, she’ll be forever remembered for that moment!

VICTORIA PRINCIPAL, BORN IN 1950 – DALLAS

In 1996, this queen became chief of staff to John Brumby, who was the Leader of the Opposition in Victoria. This was the goose that laid the golden egg, as it set her political career rolling. During Julia's tenure as prime minister, she faced a lot of criticism, but surprisingly she is now ranked among the best premiers of our generation.

Paul Keating is famous for being the 24th prime minister of Australia, serving from 1991 to 1996. Did you know that he once managed a rock band called The Ramrods? There is no doubt that John Howard is one of Australia's most popular prime ministers. The many awards and recognitions he received, including the Member of the Order of Merit from Queen Elizabeth II, prove why he is highly regarded today. He served as the leader of Australia for eleven years, the second-longest term of office in the country's history.

During his tenure, Howard introduced reformed gun laws, kindled by the 1996 Port Arthur mass shooting. Upon retiring from politics, the ex-prime minister signed a contract with the Washington Speakers Bureau to acquire speaking engagements for him. Before joining the Liberal Party in 1992, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs was a partner at Robinson Cox's firm.

Marie Bashir, Born in 1930 – Dame of the Order of Australia

When Dame Marie Bashir was sworn into her position in 2001, New South Wales welcomed its first female Governor. Queen Elizabeth II appointed her upon the recommendation of Premier Bob Carr. Of course, most people, if not all, welcomed the choice, especially because of the dame's many achievements.

Bashir is a medical doctor by profession. She graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of Sydney Medical School. She founded the Aboriginal Mental Health Unit in 1995, providing health services for locals. With Bashir's achievements, it's no surprise that she received many honors, including Dame of the Order of Australia.

PENNY WONG, BORN IN 1968 - SENATOR FOR SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Before she was voted for South Australia senator, Penny Wong was a lawyer and political advisor known for being high-minded, which was reflected in the clients she took on. Wong would serve in the Senate for five years, after which she would become a member of the Australian Cabinet.

Now minister for foreign affairs, she has previously also been in charge of the climate change and finance dockets. Although each of these was a new field to her, Wong has consistently proven to be adaptable and one who is committed to whatever the universe entrusts her with. This politician has two children with her partner, Sophie Allouache.

REBECCA JUDD, BORN IN 1983 - SEVEN NEWS ANCHOR

Although we no longer see Rebecca Judd as much on our TV screens as we did between 2006 and 2018, this former model’s hands are still very full, owing to her role as an entrepreneur and responsibility as a mother of four. Rebecca came into the limelight in the early 2000s as Chris Judd’s girlfriend before being offered a role on television as a guest host on Nine Perth’s ‘Just Add Water.’

A year later, this beauty secured herself a more permanent position as a weekend news anchor for Seven News. In 2020, Judd announced that she was taking a break from mainstream media. She has since authored a book and was also appointed an ambassador for ‘The Skincare’ company.

JESSICA ROWE, BORN IN 1970 - STUDIO 10 CO-HOST

Despite the public criticism she has received throughout her career, and the doubts over her ability to deliver in a newsroom, Jessica Rowe has proven that she indeed deserves every opportunity that comes her way. In addition to being a mental health advocate, the former Studio 10 co-host has also been on a stage play as an actress and narrator. She is currently a presenter of a self-titled podcast. She might be in her 50s, but this beauty is not slowing down anytime soon.
